Ok well I came on here to post about my workout, which I may still get to, put I am getting sidetracked. I looked at my blog and thought the same thing I do everytime I look at it. It sucks. Its boring, the same as most other WordPress blogs and doesn’t really say that much about me. I want to redo it.
I figured I should start small, like everything else in my life that I am going to try to do. More on that in my workout post. I deleted a lot of the plugins that haven’t been enabled in a long time, and then took a look at the ones that are enabled.
I realize that my blog isn’t going to make money. Its my personal blog. Even if it someday becomes huge, I could always start a commercial blog to make money off of. No, I want to keep this blog personal. No ads. No advertising (unless its for one of my projects). Just simpleness about me and what I want to write about. Knowing this, I immediately disabled and deleted my Adsense plugin.
Since I don’t want to make money off my blog and I want to keep it personal, I don’t care how many people visit it or who visits it. I don’t need analytics on the site. Thats another plugin that can get removed. A bonus side-effect of removing the tracking pluging and Google Analytics code is that my site now loads slightly faster.
Trying to get the site to load faster, I have also removed Feedburner stuff since I have to do something with that account anyway. Something is loading jQuery and I have no idea what. While I use jQuery and know it, I don’t think I need it on the site right now since I don’t have anything doing anything fancy. Will have to look into that later.
My goal is to get a basic theme up by the end of the month to make this look better.
I am trying to keep up with this and post new content but its getting hard. I have so much going on and more is coming my way hopefully. This is a good thing I am so busy. I really want to keep this blog going so I am going to have to work on my juggling act a little better.
I am still working on this blog. I have moved it over to WordPress and I have created a copy as a dev area. I am working on the styling and functionality to give me the features I want right now.
On a personal note, Amanda and I are doing amazing. She is wonderful and I’m happy with her. I’m going to an Angels vs. As game tomorrow with her. This weekend I’m going with Adrienne canoing on the Russian River. I don’t know why it is called that so don’t ask.
Over the new few days/weeks/months, I am going to be changing my blog. First thing I am going to do is migrate it from Google’s free blogger, to an actual blogging application, most probably WordPress. After that is done (and thats probably not going to be easy but oh well, I will start to work on the functionality and look and feel. I am thinking I may take snapshots to give a sort of timeline as to the progression of this. I’ll see how it goes.
On another note, I had an AMAZING day with Amanda today. Wow she is great.
I finished reading ‘A sign of Macs to come’ by Matt Asay and must say I don’t entirely agree with some of the points. First thing that sticks out is this quote:
Yes, you can run Microsoft’s Office for Mac natively on the Mac, and it actually looks better on the Mac than on Windows. It works as well on the Mac as iTunes works on Windows.
Now, when I read that line, I laughed. iTunes doesn’t work on Windows. Yeah sure it plays music and videos and probably syncs to iPods and iPhones (wouldn’t know since I don’t own either and have no interest in either) but it slows computers down to a crawl. It takes up so much of your’s resources that it is ridiculous. I am a computer nerd and know pretty much everything going on with my computer so I can say that with some confidence. 3 different computers with different configurations have led me to that conclusion. I like the ease with which I can change tags and I like how good it sorts my music in the file system but I hate how slow it makes things. Given that my computer is pretty fast and has lots of memory so its not that bad, it still shouldn’t do that.
Another thing about that quote that I just thought of, iTunes doesn’t alway play nice on Windows. I remember last year when an iTunes update broke Outlook. The iTunes update did something and installed an Outlook plugin that prevented Outlook from sending emails and other weird stuff. Why in the world is iTunes trying to integrate itself into Outlook??!!?? It took awhile to figure that one out. We had to tell people that they could only install Outlook or iTunes, not both. It was crazy. Eventually they released another fix that problem but c’mon, it shouldn’t have happened.
I believe Macs have their place somewhere. I am firmly a PC guy (Not Window’s guy even though thats what I most use, but I use Linux often enough too) and don’t see what the big draw is to Macs. They are expensive (sometimes twice as much for the same exact hardware), not always expandable and are not as widely supported in terms of programs. It sometimes makes things try to be so simple that it becomes sometimes extremely easy to mess things up on your computer. Like you can have a million things loaded and then wonder why your computer is slow. All the icons are somewhat hidden on the launch bar thingie and applications can have all their windows closed but the app itself is still running.
I just don’t know. Most techies I believe prefer PCs and if they, the experts, prefer PCs, shouldn’t everyone?
